三田村光土里（1964年、愛知県生まれ）は、東京を拠点に活動する現代美術作家です。2005年には文化庁の海外派遣芸術家としてフィンランドに滞在し、同年にフィンランドの三都市で巡回個展を開催。2006年にはウィーンの分離派会館Secessionでの個展を行うなど、国際的に活躍しています。

今回の個展「20世紀のかけら」では、20世紀の歴史と記憶を現代的な視点で再解釈し、個人的な経験と結びつけた作品が展示されます。三田村は「Chronicle of the 20th Century」という事典を基に、20世紀の重要な出来事や報道写真を断片化し古びた小物や端材に組み込むことで、抽象的な歴史を日常的な形で表現しています。
特に、作家自身が60歳という節目を迎えることをテーマに、辞典に書き残された他人の記念日のメッセージと重ね合わせながら、時代を超えた共通性を探っています。戦争や惨事など20世紀の暗い側面にも向き合い、現代の視点から捉え直す試みが特徴です。
「20世紀のかけら」は、歴史的な出来事を個人的な経験や感覚を通して再構築し、現代に生きる私たちとの関係性を探っています。三田村の特徴である「日常の記憶や追憶のモチーフを紡いでいく」表現が、20世紀という大きな歴史的文脈にどのように展開されるのか、ぜひご注目ください。

昨年、オーストラリアのリサイクルショップで一冊のとても重くて分厚い本を買った。
“Chronicle of the 20th Century”と題されたその本は、20世紀の主要な出来事を大量の報道写真とともに総集した年表事典で、20世紀終盤にいくつかの国で出版された。
この本をもとに小作品をつくろうと日本に持ち帰り、8月に入って改めて本を開いた。
すると中表紙に、父親の60歳の誕生日を祝う子供たちからの手書きのメッセージを見つけた。2000年3月28日と日付が添えられ、1940年のページをめくってみると、惨たらしい写真の数々が目に飛び込んだ。
100年分のトピックを一冊に編集すれば、戦争や殺戮、惨事ばかりが誌面を占める。
人の世の非情、それを繰り返す歴史の無情が、今も終わらない戦争や原爆の日、終戦の日とも重なり気が滅入った。制作の苦闘など些末なことだが、歴史と向き合うのが簡単であってはならない。わたしも今月、この本が贈られた主とおなじく60歳を迎える。ならばこの節目の夏に、思い切り足掻いてみようと決めた。
記事や写真を眺めても、知り得るのは史実のかけらにも満たないし真実にも近づけないだろう。それでも、そこに集められた20世紀の僅かな断片を古びた小物や端材にそっとはめ込んでみる。すると、歴史に堆積する記憶は、本の中でなく生きている私たちのそこここに、言葉にならないまま静かに宿って見える。

In 2006, he had a solo exhibition at the Secession in Vienna.

Her signature project Art & Breakfast attracted attention for its unique format, which combined an installation with an event where participants had breakfast together.
In her solo exhibition ‘Piece of the 20th Century’, Mitamura reinterprets the history and memories of the 20th century from a contemporary perspective and links them to personal experiences. Based on the encyclopaedia ‘Chronicle of the 20th Century’, Mitamura expresses abstract history in everyday forms by fragmenting important events and press photographs of the 20th century and incorporating them into old accessories and scrap materials.
Particularly themed around the artist's own 60th birthday, the work explores timeless commonalities by overlaying them with messages from other people's anniversaries written in the dictionary. It is characterised by an attempt to confront the darker aspects of the 20th century, such as wars and catastrophes, and to recapture them from a contemporary perspective.
Pieces of the 20th Century reconstructs historical events through personal experiences and sensations, and explores their relevance to our contemporary lives. Please look out for how Mitamura's characteristic expression of ‘spinning motifs of everyday memories and reminiscences’ will be developed in the larger historical context of the 20th century.

Last year, I bought a very heavy and thick book at a secondhand shop in Australia. Titled Chronicle of the 20th Century, this book is a chronicle encyclopedia that compiles the major events of the 20th century, accompanied by a vast number of press photos. It was published in several countries toward the end of the 20th century.
I brought this book back to Japan with the intention of creating a small piece based on it. In August, I opened the book again. I then found a handwritten message from the children celebrating their father's 60th birthday on the front endpaper. It was dated March 28, 2000. When I flipped to the page for 1940, a number of horrific photographs jumped out at me.
If you compile a century's worth of topics into a single book, the pages are filled with nothing but war, slaughter, and disaster. The heartlessness of human affairs and the cruelty of repeating history overlap with the still ongoing wars, the days of the atomic bombings, and the anniversary of the end of the war, making me feel depressed. The struggle to create something is a trivial matter, but confronting history should not be easy. I, too, will turn 60 this month, just like the recipient of this book. So, I have decided to struggle with all my might during this milestone summer.
Even when looking at the articles and photographs, what we can know is not even a fragment of the historical facts, and we likely can't get close to the truth either. Still, I gently fit the small fragments of the 20th century gathered there into old objects and scraps. In doing so, the memories accumulated in history seem to quietly reside, not within the book, but in the lives of all of us, without being put into words.
